Education Program

IR3S Joint Education Program

Sustainability Science Consortium (SSC) seeks to promote a sustainable global society and establish a new higher level of learning that forms the foundation of "sustainability science". SSC is a cooperative organization consisting of Japanese universities (University of Tokyo, which is the supervising school, along with Kyoto University, Osaka University, Hokkaido University and Ibaraki University) and other organizations.

SSC works to promote research combining diverse academic fields related to sustainability and to foster specialists who will be internationally active in building sustainable societies. To this end, a Sustainability Science Education Program has been established at each university. Osaka University's Sustainability Science Associate Program (an interdisciplinary Education Program) is an education program created within this larger framework.

In the "Frontiers of Sustainability Science" joint core course, top researchers from the different universities lecture in English on the latest sustainability science research. The goal is that, through this exposure to the leading edge of sustainability science research, students will come to know the vastness and interrelatedness of the fields concerned with sustainability science and will participate in their integration and the process of establishing sustainability science. In the 2011 school year, an intensive course was offered in July 9, July 16, and July 17 through a remote learning system. The course details will soon be announced on this web page.
